Jie Jenny Zou reported on the payouts pharmaceutical companies made to health care professionals associated with the Stony Brook University Medical Center.
An ethical debate has popped up in the medical community over doctors and researchers accepting money from drug companies to lecture about their products. Some see this as contradictory to a doctor’s priorities—it might lead to them recommending a more expensive drug that they represent, rather than a cheaper and just as effective drug. Others think it’s fine, as long as long medical professionals are transparent about their payments and only represent products they believe in.
